Many wrestling fans widely consider the International Wrestling Grand Prix (IWGP) Championships as the most prestigious title in professional wrestling. New Japan Pro-Wrestling (NJPW) established the IWGP Heavyweight Championship in 1983, and some of the greatest wrestlers of all time, such as Antonio Inoki, Hulk Hogan, and Kazuchika Okada, have held the title. In fact, NJPW currently recognizes seven different IWGP Championships, each representing a different weight class or discipline. The IWGP United States Champion
The IWGP United States Championship, introduced in 2017, is one of the latest additions to the IWGP Championships. The inaugural champion was none other than Kenny Omega, who defeated Tomohiro Ishii in the tournament final to become the first-ever IWGP United States Champion. Since then, the title has been held by a number of top wrestlers, including Jay White, Juice Robinson, and Jon Moxley.
NJPW views the IWGP United States Championship as a significant title for expanding into the North American market. The championship has been defended multiple times in the United States, notably at NJPW's "G1 Special in the USA" events in Long Beach, California. The current IWGP United States Champion is KENTA, who won the title from Moxley in February 2021.
